Having recently visited Tignes Les Brevieres I thought I would share my thoughts and experiences of the village with you.
The history of this traditional Savoyard village dates back to the 13th Century and a stroll around the quaint and compact village with its old farmhouses, pretty/authentic chalets, narrow streets and statuesque church bring back a definite sense of nostalgia, for a by-gone era. There have, of course, been various developments within the village in recent years but, fortunately, the newer chalets have been designed and built sympathetically and in keeping with the original style, thus allowing the resort to maintain its charm whilst moving with the times.
Tignes Les Brevieres is certainly a hidden gem within the Espace Killy ski area. Situated on the edge of a breathtaking lake and within a tree lined valley it offers endless picturesque views and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, whilst enjoying a somewhat exclusive and mysterious enigma.
Tignes Les Brevieres is at an altitude of 1550 metres, providing quick and easy access to 300 kilometres of some of the best skiing in the world. The village is fully integrated/connected with its big sister, Tignes (altitude 2100 metres) by way of the Le Sache bubble lift and a four man chairlift. The north facing slopes, comprising blue, red and black pistes, keep their snow well into May, allowing for a long ski season. There are also a couple of nursery slopes, serviced by free lifts, conveniently located adjacent to/ close to the ski school meeting point.
The majority of the chalets in Les Brevieres are independently managed/operated and family owned so you really get a sense of being “at home from home”, with intimate surroundings, hearty, home cooked food, superb service and the obligatory open fire.
The village boasts a number of typical Savoyard restaurants serving delicious local dishes, such as fondue, pirard and raclettes, complemented by a wide selection of robust French wines. The restaurant we chose was superb and I was very impressed with both the food and extremely professional service. After a leisurely meal we left the restaurant and continued the night with a tour of the local bars. Considering Les Brevieres is a small village the local bars stay open well into the night and are all equally welcoming and informal, in the typical French “après ski” style. Whether you opt for a cocktail, warming brandy or a “serieux” after an exhilarating day up the mountain, followed by a tasty home cooked meal is only complete when you finish it all off with a few hours in the local beer house.
