Easter ski holidays
Although not the most attractive of resorts, purpose-built Tignes is all about world class skiing at high altitude, and one of the best lift systems in the world. With Easter week falling at the end of the season, skiers look to stay higher for the best snow and Tignes comes up trumps on this score. Whereas Easter skiing holidays in many of France’s purpose-built resorts lack charm, Tignes has carved a niche with its laid-back, friendly and unpretentious vibe that uniquely appeals to skiers returning year after year.
Apres ski Tignes:
Whilst the livelier après ski is undoubtedly over the Val D’Isere side, party-goers shouldn’t rule Tignes out! When skiing back to Val Claret (the top part of the resort) head to the Coulouir (or Cools as it’s affectionately known amongst regulars.) Good DJs spin the decks later in the evening and a heady mix of people means there’s a great atmosphere. Le Lac, the main hub of the resort, houses more of the nightlife and the Loop Bar is a ‘must see’ for its big sun terrace and happy hour drinks! All of the three main villages have nightclubs, which is great if you’re craving something cheesy after checking out Tignes’ many cool bars.
Tignes Skiing:
In Tignes itself the skiing stretches an impressive distance from the Grande Motte glacier at 3456m all the way down to Le Breviere at 1550m. Add Val D’Isere’s pistes into the mix, and you can see why this seamlessly linked ski area holds so much appeal! Late season slush is kept at bay because of the resort’s impressive altitude, leaving you to enhoy the well groomed runs with ease.
Beginners are probably better off sticking to the Val D’Isere side as the runs over the ‘ski tranquil’ area are excellent for practising. Intermediates and experts however will be in their element. Good pistes to try are the Trolles – a fast black with rollers on the bottom into Tignes Le Lac, or the notorious Sache – with moguls most of the way down to Le Breviere. Off-piste is also incredible: venture off under the Palafour on powder days, and if you’re brave enough, navigate your way through the trees down to Le Breviere where you can recover with a chocolat chaud at the bottom restaurant.
Off the slopes/ Bad weather days:
Finding places to eat and drink aren’t a problem – with an abundance of bars and restaurants in the three main villages of Lavachet, Le Lac and Val Claret. Aside from these well-rehearsed activities you could try your hand at ice-diving on the lake or a helicopter trip to offer you views of the whole Tarentaise!
